There's no single best format for an esports tournament. The right choice depends on what game you're running, how many participants you have, and how much time you've got. A fighting-game local and a 64-team Valorant cup want completely different structures. This guide maps the common esports scenarios to the format that fits, so you can pick with confidence instead of guessing.
Picking the right format is the first decision every organizer makes, and it's permanent. In Score7, the format is locked once you create your tournament. You can change participants, adjust the schedule, and tweak standings criteria all you want, but the format itself stays.
So it's worth getting it right. This guide covers every major tournament format, explains when each one shines, and gives you a straightforward way to decide which one fits your event.
Tiebreakers decide what happens when two or more participants have the same number of points in the standings. They're the rules that determine who finishes 2nd vs 3rd, who advances from a group stage, and who gets relegated. Every league and tournament needs them, and they need to be decided before the first match, not after ties happen.
Running a tournament with group stages, knockouts, and possibly a playoff for 3rd place? Score7 handles complex formats without complicated setup. You can combine formats and auto-advance teams based on your rules.
