How to Customize the Ranking System or Add Tiebreakers

Customizing the Ranking System in Score7

Every tournament has its own idea of fairness. That’s why Score7 lets you fully customize how teams are ranked in round-robin stages—including how ties are broken.

Whether you're organizing a local league or a school competition, you can control the logic behind the standings table.

Where to Edit Ranking Criteria

  1. Open the Standing section in your tournament
  2. Click Update Standing Criteria

This opens a configuration panel where you can:

  • Reorder criteria using drag and drop
  • Enable or disable specific criteria
  • Choose whether each one is ascending or descending (e.g., most goals first vs. fewest)

Available Ranking Criteria

Score7 offers a wide range of ranking criteria. The full list:

Core criteria:

  • Points — standings currency earned from results (win/draw/loss)
  • Score Difference — score for minus score against
  • Score For — total scores in favor
  • Score Against — total scores conceded
  • Matches Played
  • Number of Wins
  • Winning Percentage
  • Points Per Game — average points earned per match played

Chess and Swiss criteria:

  • ELO Rating — performance-based rating calculation
  • Buchholz — sum of all opponents' scores (measures strength of schedule)
  • Sonneborn-Berger — results weighted by opponent strength

Set-based criteria (for volleyball, tennis, badminton, etc.):

  • Sets Played
  • Sets Won
  • Sets Lost
  • Sets Difference

Fair Play criteria:

  • Yellow Card Count — can be used as a tiebreaker (typically ascending — fewer cards ranks higher)
  • Red Card Count

Points is enabled by default but all criteria can be toggled on or off. The order matters — the first enabled criterion is the primary sort, followed by the next as a tiebreaker, and so on.

Setting Custom Tie-Breakers (Head-to-Head)

Score7 supports head-to-head mini tables as a tie-breaker if the following conditions are met:

  • All tied teams have played each other
  • Each team has played the same number of matches against others in the tied group

When this happens:

  • A mini table is created using just those matches
  • The same ranking criteria are applied to break the tie
  • The result is displayed automatically—no manual setup needed

Changing the Points System

To change how many points are awarded per result:

  1. Go to the Overview section
  2. Scroll to Tournament Settings
  3. Set the number of points for:
    • Win
    • Draw
    • Loss

This is useful if your sport uses non-standard scoring, like:

  • 2 points for a win
  • 0 for a draw
  • Bonus points (handled via manual adjustments)

Manual Point Adjustments (Bonuses & Penalties)

To adjust standings manually:

  1. Go to Standing
  2. Click Add/Subtract Points
  3. Select the team and enter:
    • The number of points to add or remove
    • A reason for the adjustment (e.g., late arrival, tie-break override)

This change is logged and applied directly in the table.
